Morgan Gannon and Levi Edwards - two youngsters with a huge Leeds Rhinos future

Levi Edwards trained with Rhinos towards the end of last season and Morgan Gannon joined up with the full-time group yesterday.

Though he admitted much-touted prospects don’t always make the grade, Agar has high hopes for the two 17 year olds.

“You have got to be careful talking about young juniors,” Agar warned.

“We’ve all seen it over the years, juniors come on the scene and everybody thinks they are the next big thing and sometimes playing rugby league is not their goal and you lose them from the game or sometimes they don’t quite live up to expectations, for many different reasons.

“But they are two impressive young men. It is quite unusual that you take two guys straight out of scholarship into first grade, generally they spend a year or two in academy before they come up, but we do feel these two young kids are perhaps generational talents.”

Both players came from the Siddal community club in Halifax.

Of Gannon, whose father Jim is a former Super League player, Agar noted: “When I speak to Morgan on the phone, you put the phone down and just can’t help but be unbelievably impressed with his level-headedness, his maturity, his emotional intelligence. He could play a number of roles, he could play as a ball-playing 13, or as an edge player, he has got that bit of Sculthorpe, Farrell, Sinfield so if you needed to play him as a stand-off he would comfortably handle that role. He is turning into a really good physical specimen too. It is very early days, but we already have a fairly big opinion on him.”

Agar was already impressed by what he saw of Edwards in training last year.

“That was brilliant for him because he started to understand what it’s all about, coming into first grade,” he said of the teenager’s first taste of a Super League environment.

“We are still not sure of his position, he can play centre or back-row, he has played competently at loose-forward, he can play stand-off or wing - he is a really exciting talent and a great young athlete.”
