Moore backs Dewsbury Rams to spring some surprises

LAST YEAR'S great escape laid a platform for Dewsbury Rams to climb the Betfred Championship table, half-back Gareth Moore reckons.

Rams seemed doomed to relegation after losing their opening eight league games, but found form under new coach Neil Kelly and eventually finished a respectable eighth.

They begin the new season at home to Sheffield Eagles on Friday and Moore believes they are good enough to challenge the top sides in a division which includes four full-time teams.

“We have added a few players and lost a few, but we won 10 out of 13 games last year and we will take a bit of confidence into this season,” said the Leeds Rhinos academy product who joined Dewsbury from Championship rivals Halifax last May.

“We aren’t going to look too far ahead. We’ll take it game by game and hopefully if we can win our home games and knock off teams like Rochdale in our away games, we will do pretty well.”

Friday’s match – which kicks off the whole competition – will be an indicator of how Rams might fare this season. Eagles finished one place above them in 2017 and Moore reckons it is an ideal first test.

“It’s always tough against Sheffield, but we beat them twice last year,” he said.

“They are coming to our place so we will be confident going into that game.”
