Luke Gale - All change on the England front, but I'm focused on getting Leeds Rhinos back to winning ways

THE BIG news this week has been the change of coach for England with Shaun Wane taking over from Wayne Bennett.

I think Shaun will do a good job, but the first thing I want to do is pay tribute to Wayne Bennett for what he achieved during his time in charge.

I thought Wayne did a great job and he is somebody I, personally, liked.

He gave me my England debut and I have a lot of respect for him.

I will remember things like the 2017 World Cup forever. When I have retired those memories will stay with me so I am grateful to Wayne for what he did for my career.

I suppose in our sport you are remembered for your last game and the GB tour last year wasn’t a success.

I wasn’t involved in that, but obviously it was disappointing how the Lions tour went.

It didn’t look great and the boys didn’t perform how they would have wanted to, but Wayne is such a good guy, I had a great time with him and so did the other England boys.

But, as a player, changes of coach are part of the game. Wayne has moved on now, Shaun has come in and I’ve no doubt he will do a great job.

I don’t know him personally, but he seems a perfect fit for the England team.

His sides always play with tough characteristics and he is a passionate man.

I have played against his teams and you know he can get them revved up and they are always tough to beat.

He has been out of the game for more than a year so he will be itching to get back into RL and I think it is a good appointment.

The next two years are big for England with the Ashes series this autumn and then the World Cup.

I am sure Shaun will want to make his imprint on the side against Australia and there’s a World Cup to win after that, which I genuinely think we have a chance of doing, so it is a good time to get the job.

I loved playing for England and it was really disappointing to miss out in 2018 because of injury and then the same last year for the Lions tour.

If I get another chance to pull a Test jersey on I’ll jump at it. I don’t think anyone really nailed down the half-back spot for Great Britain, but I think if you are playing well week-in and week-out, that sort of thing comes at the end of the year.

I have definitely got a lot of footy in me, but we’ll definitely have to play a lot better than we did last weekend!

There’s a lot of water to go under the bridge before I’ll be thinking about England. I want Leeds to have a good season first and then everything else will take care of itself.

Obviously last week against Hull wasn’t the start to the season we wanted or were expecting, but we’ve got a chance to right some wrongs on Sunday away to Huddersfield.

They had a great win last week and they’ve got a quality No 7 in Aidan Sezer. I’ve seen clips of the Catalans game in round one and it looked like he played well and so did the whole team. We’ve looked at Huddersfield, but we have got to get our own house in order and we know we’ve got some hard work to do before Sunday afternoon.

We did some review at the start of the week, which wasn’t great. It was a disappointing performance, but I’ve been around this game a long time and nothing is won in round one. We didn’t play well, but we have to brush ourselves down and go again. We know the areas we’ve got to work on and I don’t think there’s any easy games in Super League now.

Gone are the days when you think you’re going to cruise to the two points.

Huddersfield will be full of confidence and we know we will have to play well but, if we can do the things we’ve been working on in practice, we believe we can go there and get the two points.
