Leeds Rhinos Nostalgia: On this day in history
Our man Peter Smith delves through the YEP archives to find out what happened on this day in the history of Leeds Rhinos.
Rhinos have played only once on March 22 in the Super League era, winning 50-28 at Warrington 19 years ago, when Marcus St Hilaire and Keith Senior both crossed twice.
Other try scorers were Francis Cummins, Ryan Sheridan, Andy Hay, Rob Burrow and Willie Poching. Brad Walker kicked seven goals.
Leeds’ Challenge Cup hopes were crushed when they were beaten 11-2 by Warrington in a semi-final at Wigan.
Leeds trailed 8-0 at half-time, but cut the deficit with two David Marshall penalty goals before the Wire’s third try, in stoppage-time, sent them to Wembley.
Half a century ago, Leeds sent a makeshift side to St Helens and were beaten 30-9.
Tony Wainwright scored a try for Leeds – who had beaten Hull KR two days earlier – and Barry Seabourne added a goal and two drop goals.
Leeds picked up their ninth successive league win, beating Batley 29-5 at Mount Pleasant.
Try scorers were Dick Gemmell (2), Ron Cowan, Syd Hynes, Bernard Watson, Drew Broatch and Geoff Wriglesworth, Watson kicked three goals and Hynes added one.
The Loiners beat Bradford Northern 18-10 at Headingley four days after an away defeat by the same opponents.
All-time greats Eric and Fred Harris were try scorers, along with Charlie Eaton and Dennis Madden and Jack Kelly kicked three goals.
