Leeds have conceded more than 52 points at home on just four occasions, the most recent being a 56-18 loss to Bradford Bulls 20 years ago.

McDermott admitted it was a “terrible” scoreline and one of the worst performances since he took over as coach ahead of the 2011 season.

Last season’s coach of the year was reluctant to comment in depth until he has reviewed the game, but conceded Rhinos were guilty of “soft” misses in defence.

He insisted the players remain “spirited” and are trying hard to turn things around.

Cas boss Daryl Powell said: “To put both sides of the game together in the way we did was really pleasing.

“Our attacking play was pretty accurate.

“Some of the things we did in the second half were absolute class.

“The players were excellent the way they went about the game. Defensively, we are starting to get a real edge about us, which is probably even more pleasing than the attacking game.”
