The RFL match review panel has handed the second-row a two match penalty notice for Grade C striking.

He was deemed to have made late contact with the head of Ryan Hampshire, an incident that saw Mellor sin-binned in last week’s 30-6 loss against Wakefield Trinity.

Leeds may only have one regular round fixture remaining so, unless he successfully contests the charge or they reach the play-offs and advance, the 26-year-old’s season could be over.

Rhinos team-mate Richie Myler was cautioned for striking Oli Holmes in the incident that saw the Castleford Tigers second-row sent off having retaliated by kicking the full-back.

However, the match review panel only deemed Holmes’ action worthy of a caution saying it was ‘light contact’.

Another Leeds player - Robert Lui - has also been cautioned for a dangerous throw on Wakefield’s Yusuf Aydin in yesterday’s win at Belle Vue.

Meanwhile, Rhinos’ hopes of chasing down fourth-placed Catalans Dragons have improved after the French side lost 42-24 against Salford Red Devils today.

Krisnan Inu scored a hat-trick of tries as Salford overturned a 12-point half-time deficit.

Tries from former Leeds players Tui Lolohea (2) and Kallum Watkins were key in the transformation, with winger Inu adding his third late on and also finishing with seven goals.

It leaves Catalans’ win percentage at 61.54 with fifth-placed Leeds narrowly behind on 58.52 with clubs now into the final fortnight of regular rounds.
