Shaul, 30, will cover for Max Jowitt who could be sidelined for a month with a hamstring injury.

“We needed a full-back,” Trinity coach Willie Poching said.

Lee Gaskell has been fantastic, but this was an opportunity to get an out-and-out full-back.

“He wasn’t playing for Hull, we thought we could give him an opportunity and they were willing to let us have him, which we are really grateful for.

“We’re excited to have him in back-field for us this weekend.”

Poching added: “He knows the game and the position.

“He’s a lively fella, full of energy off the field and he’s brought that to us on the field too.

“He has been a really good addition to the group this week.”

Forward Jay Pitts has undergone surgery on a hand and will miss the rest of this season, but Lee Kershaw could make his first appearance of the campaign this weekend, 10 months after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Trinity will be two points adrift at the foot of the table if Toulouse win at home to Salford Red Devils on Saturday, but Poching insisted: “We are taking it week by week.

“We are up against arguably the best team in the competition.

"They are the pace setters and have been for a few years.

"We understand the enormity of the task this week, but we are ready to embrace that.

“We have prepared all week for a great St Helens team and our focus has also been on us being the best we can be.”

Poching remains convinced Trinity secure Super League safety.

He said: "We will fight until we can’t fight any more or we are in the clear.”
