It's Hall over - league leaders' shield-winning try is Leeds Rhinos' greatest moment

Others on our list have been matches, events or signings, but this was a true moment - an instant when frustration and despair turned into unbridled delight.

It is, of course, Ryan Hall’s last-second try in the final game of the 2015 Super-8s season, at Huddersfield Giants, which snatched the league leaders’ shield from Wigan’s grasp and kept Rhinos on course for the treble.

Leeds went into the match knowing they’d finish top if they won, second with a draw and would be third - having led the table by six points at one stage - should they lose.

With eight minutes remaining Rhinos were eight points behind and it all seemed to be going pear-shaped, but then Tom Briscoe scored and Kevin Sinfield landed as important a goal as any in his career from the touchline.

As the clock ticked down, Leeds were awarded a penalty and, rather than trying a tap or kick to touch and setting up an attempt to score a winning try, Sinfield took the two to level the scores.

Wigan had beaten Castleford Tigers by that stage and had one hand on the shield. There was less than a minute left when Giants restarted and with 10 seconds remaining Rhinos were in possession, but midway inside their own half.

Then Danny McGuire chipped ahead, Hall ran on to the ball, evaded Giants full-back Scott Grix and - as the hooter sounded - dashed in from half-way to seal a 20-16 win and top spot.

There was a pause as the video referee checked the score and once the green light was given, Leeds’ huge travelling support - at the opposite end of the field - went wild with joy.

It was incredible drama, heightened by the fact a helicopter carrying the league leaders’ shield was in sight of Wigan’s DW Stadium when Hall scored and had to turn around and make its way to Huddersfield for the presentation.

Leeds went on to beat Wigan in the Grand Final, completing a clean sweep of all available trophies, but it would not have happened but for Hall’s amazing try right at the death.
