Four Nations: We just didn't execute, says Leeds Rhinos' Ryan Hall

A 36-18 defeat to Australia yesterday eliminated England and means the Kangaroos will face New Zealand in Sunday’s final at Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium.

Hall said: “It’s frustrating. “Wayne (Bennett, England’s coach) has said we beat ourselves, which we did.

“I know Australia have got some great players and they scored 36 points, but we beat ourselves - we gave stupid things away.

“We missed touch twice with penalties and we dropped the ball. When you drop the ball the Australian team take full advantage, they don’t let you off.

“I know they have got to be good to take advantage of that, but it all started with an England error.”

England trailed only 10-6 at half-time and Hall said: “We thought we could get back into it, but one or two errors led to a massive chunk of the game being played near our goalline.”

Despite the disappointing tournament, Hall reckons Bennett is the right man to take England into next year’s World Cup.

“He told us how to win the game, we’re the ones who didn’t execute,” Hall said. “He has told us what we did wrong and we all believe that, but we have got to wait 12 months to try and put it right.”

Hall scored a try in all three of England’s Four Nations games, taking his tally to 31 in as many Test appearances, but felt partly responsible for yesterday’s result.

He said: “It’s nice to score a try, but I was one of the blokes who dropped a ball in this game and they went try, kick-off, try off the back of that error.”
