Former Leeds Rhinos prospect Corey Johnson scores in opening win for Hunslet Club Parkside over Oulton Raiders - National Conference round-up
Former Leeds Rhinos hooker Corey Johnson was on the scoresheet as Hunslet Club Parkside kicked off the new National Conference season with a derby win over Oulton Raiders.
Oulton’s side included Harvey Whiteley, who featured twice in Betfred Super League for Rhinos last year.
Johnson made his Super League debut for Rhinos in the final game of the 2019 season, but announced his retirement from the professional game, aged 19, in March last year.
Playing at scrum-half, he was among Parkside’s try scorers in a 26-4 defeat of Oulton, along with Liam Thompson, Danny Lidbury, Jack McShane and Kieran Murphy.
Andy Hullock kicked three goals.
Oulton trailed only 8-4 at half-time. Reece Chapman-Smith - another Rhinos academy product, who was with Halifax Panthers last year - scored their try.
After more than a year in hibernation, the Conference has been split into regional groups for this season.
Also in League D, Stanningley hit back from 18-4 down to beat East Leeds 22-18.
Stanningley’s tries were scored by Jack Sykes (2), Loui Godfrey and Dion Henry. Ryan Taylor landed three goals.
Luke Littlewood scored a try and three goals for Easts, with Matthew Stables
and Josh Wood also touching down.
The game between Hunslet Warriors and Milford was postponed and has been rearranged for Thursday, June 17.
Thornhill Trojans cruised to a 44-10 victory at Drighlington in League F, having led 24-0 at the break.
Much of the damage was done by hat-trick try scorer Harry Woollard and Joel
Gibson, who touched down and added five goals.
Declan Kaye scored a try and conversion and Jake Wilson, George Woodcock and Adam Bird also crossed.
Steve Meldrum and Jake Dearden were Drighlington’s try scorers and Michael Sanderson added a conversion.
Featherstone Lions were beaten 58-4 at West Bowling, Dean Gamble scoring their try two minutes from time.
