It was only Rams’ second win since February and moved them up a place to ninth in the table, three points clear of the relegation zone.

“Dale Morton, Lucas Walshaw, all the middle players and Adam Ryder played really, really well,” said relieved coach Neil Kelly.

“Adam fitted in really well for a lad who has only trained twice with us.

“It was a big test for him.”

Ryder, a centre, was signed last week after being released by Betfred League One side Keighley Cougars.

Kelly had described the game two days ago as “must-win” and he reflected: “It was one of those where the result is more important than the performance.

“It was very hot and humid and both sides did well.

“We scored four tries to two so were good value for the win, but they made up the points difference with penalties which we’ve started to concede again.

“We’ve got to be careful we don’t undermine our improvement with ill-discipline. Scoring four tries was a brilliant effort in the conditions, but we gave them two gifts of tries.”

Dewsbury visit Sheffield Eagles, who are one place and a point below them in the table, on Sunday.

“If we’d won the Rochdale and Swinton games, which I feel we should’ve done, we’d be on 15 points and in and around Batley on the table and relatively comfortable,” Kelly added. “But we didn’t and that has led to a really nervous period.

“But the result against Barrow has given us added incentive to go to Sheffield and get another good win.”

Rams were without Jordan Crowther who was recalled by Wakefield Trinity, but came through the game with no major new injuries for Kelly to contend with.
