Dewsbury Rams: Kelly heartened by Rams' response

SOME 'soul-searching' at half-time inspired an improved performance after the break, but boss Neil Kelly admitted his Dewsbury Rams side paid a heavy price for a disastrous start away to London Broncos.

Rams trailed 30-0 midway through the Kingstone Press Championship clash, but scored two unconverted tries in the second half before being beaten 52-8.

“We didn’t get off to a great start,” Kelly reflected. “We gave them a couple of gifts and after that we had already lost.

“We made a poor start, but I would like to think the effort was there. Obviously our defence needs looking at on that showing.”

Rams, who remain second from bottom in the table, hit back to make it 40-8 in the third quarter before London pulled clear again.

“After we had a bit of soul-searching we produced a better performance in the second half,” Kelly added. “But the game was already lost and at that stage we were just trying to regain pride.

“We wanted to compete from the start and go toe-to-toe with them and obviously we didn’t do that.

“They are in a different stage of their development to us and that showed.”

Kelly said his team, who are preparing for three games in eight days, including meetings with the top two, came through with no major new injuries.
