Covid-19 shock - 12 Castleford Tigers players test positive after defeat by Leeds Rhinos, Friday's game at Huddersfield Giants cancelled

Castleford’s Betfred Super League game at Huddersfield Giants on Friday has been called off after Tigers reported 12 positive tests for Covid-19 tests.

The tests were conducted on Tuesday, the day after Tigers’ derby defeat at Leeds Rhinos.

Rhinos are due to play Wakefield Trinity at St Helens on Thursday.

A Rugby Football League statement said: “The RFL and Super League will today liaise with Public Health England, Castleford Tigers and the Tigers’ last opponents, Leeds Rhinos, before the multiple case group meets to consider the data and decide next steps.

“Super League and the RFL are actively exploring all options and will make a further announcement as soon as practicable.”

Rhinos' game agianst Wakefield on Thursday is expected to go ahead.

Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "We are hoping we aren't going to be affected.

"We have no reason to believe it won't be anything other than on."

And Rhinos direrctor of rugby Kevin Sinfield added: "We will do everything we can to play tomorrow."
