Coach Daryl Powell reveals 'key message' to Wakefield Trinity ahead of BBC-televised game v Warrington Wolves

‘Play to your potential’ is the message from coach Daryl Powell to his Wakefield Trinity troops ahead of today’s (Saturday) crucial home showdown with Warrington Wolves.

Trinity are fourth in Betfred Super League, one place and four points behind Warrington and a win would virtually secure a home play-off before next weekend’s final game of the regular season away to fifth-placed Leigh Leopards.

Wakefield could still finish third if they win their last two fixtures and Warrington don’t pick up another point, but the visitors have won their last six matches and would - briefly - go level on points with the top two of Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors with a victory this afternoon.

There’s everything to play for, but Powell – who coulsd welcome back Tom Johnstone, Emre Guler and Isaiah Vagana after injury – insisted: “This is about us really and how we play - how we perform, how much energy we’ve got.” He stressed: “Obviously we’ve looked at Warrington, but we spoke about just us, our approach to everything.

“We’re in the teeth of it now, both teams are going to be in the play-offs. I think it would have to be a Grand Final for us to play Warrington again, but you never know - I think both teams are capable of doing that. It’s just about us playing to our potential, that’s the key message.”

Last week’s win against York Knights broke a three-game losing run, but Powell admitted Trinity need to be better in this afternoon’s BBC 2-televised encounter. He noted: “I think we’ve been playing at a high level for most of the last four games, particularly the Leeds game for large parts and the Wigan game. St Helens not so much, but we did some good things last week.

“I think we just want to be a little bit more consistent in games. If we do that then we know we are a challenge for everybody else.”
