Championship/League One Review: Broncos leapfrog Bulldogs as Ansell steers Hawks to victory at Newcastle

The Broncos did not look back after Wales winger Rhys Williams scored two tries in the first six minutes.

Other tries followed through Ben Hellewell, Eddie Battye, Elliot Kear, Mark Ioane and William Barthau, who also kicked two goals. Batley’s only points came from a Dave Scott try and two goals from Pat Walker.

Winger Liam Marshall, playing on loan from Wigan, scored his fourth try of the match for Swinton in the last minute to give them a 38-35 victory over Halifax at The Shay.

Halifax were on course for a fourth straight win after romping into a 16-0 lead with early tries from Miles Greenwood, Sam Smeaton, and Jake Eccleston while Greenwood added a second before half-time and others came from Brandon Moore and Ben Kaye.

Steve Tyrer kicked his fifth goal and Halifax looked to have secured the points when a drop goal from Gareth Moore edged them 35-34 in front with five minutes to go but Marshall had the final say with his side’s eighth try, adding to his earlier hat-trick and other efforts from Josh Barlow, Macauley Hallett, Chris Atkin and Shaun Robinson.

A late drop goal from Lewis Palfrey enabled Oldham to follow up their win over Batley with a 21-20 triumph over Sheffield Eagles at Bower Fold.

Danny Ansell bagged a 12-point haul to ease Hunslet Hawks to a 28-24 victory at Newcastle Thunder in League One.

Ansell ran in two tries, and added a couple of conversions, as Hunslet ran in six to Newcastle’s five touchdowns. Other tryscorers were Matt Carbutt, Richie Barnett, George Flanagan and Ayden Faal.

Newcastle’s tryscorers were Thomas Reudiger, Vincent Rennie, Derrell Olpherts, Jared Simpson and Rhys Clarke.
