Challenge Cup: Amateurs Lions and Lock Lane join Hawks in next-round draw

Lions, of National Conference Division One, stunned League One outfit South Wales Scorpions 37-20 at their Millpond ground.

“I am over the moon,” coach Jamie Rooney told the Evening Post. “When the draw was announced, the town, all the players and I were pretty excited and looking forward to it.

“I learned a lot from last year when we played York. We got a bit too excited, so this time I tried keeping them calm and ready for the game. From minute one we were ready for it and we took it straight to them. The first 40 minutes was the best we’ve played in the three years I’ve been at the club.”

Reece Dyas scored a hat-trick, Dean Gamble registered a try and drop goal and John Hardcastle, Kieran Redburn and Joe Fox also crossed, with Ian Jackson adding four goals.

Meanwhile, Hunslet crushed League One rivals Barrow Raiders 46-12 to give Matt Bramald his first competitive win as coach, a week after a home loss to York in the iPro Sport Cup.

Richie Barnett and Jimmy Watson both bagged a brace, Simon Brown touched down and kicked seven goals and Danny Ansell, Matt Carbutt and Lewis Reed completed the win.

Bramald said: “I’m immensely proud of the players. We asked some searching questions after last week and they answered pretty much every one. From one to 17 they were fantastic. Jake Normington was absolutely outstanding, he was a constant threat all afternoon, along with Mufaro Mvududu outside him. They could not handle them, they were so big, powerful and strong.”

Castleford outfit Lock Lane won 37-22 away to League One Oxford.

Adam Garlick ran in a brace and other try scorers were Royce Geoffrey, Nathan Fozzard, Nicky Saxton and Calum Butler.
