Castleford Tigers news: Oldham game called off for safety reasons after pitch hit by big freeze

Castleford Tigers’ planned pre-season opener against Oldham has been called off.

New boss Ryan Carr was due to coach Tigers for the first time on Saturday, but the club this afternoon confirmed the match has fallen victim to the current deep freeze. A club statement said: “Due to weather conditions, we can confirm Saturday’s friendly game with Oldham has been cancelled.

“The pitch at the OneBore Stadium is currently frozen over and unsafe to play on, therefore a decision was made this morning to call the game off. We have kept Oldham informed throughout the week as weather conditions have failed to improve.”

Non-members who have purchased tickets for the game are being offered a discount on admission to Tigers’ Betfred Super League season-opener at home to Wigan Warriors next month. Alternatively, tickets can be exchanged for the home Brad Singleton testimonial derby against Leeds Rhinos on Sunday, January 18 or full refunds are available by visiting the club ticket office or emailing [email protected].

Tigers has been due to play Oldham in Spain this weekend as part of the Benidorm Bash event, but the fixture was switched to Wheldon Road when that was cancelled. A scheduled Christmas fixture against Featherstone Rovers was also called off, after the visitors went into administration.
