A-Z of Leeds Rhinos - 'D' is for...Dwyer’s Drop goal.

Having squandered a 16-point lead in the second half of last season’s home derby with Castleford Tigers, Leeds found an unlikely hero when Brad Dwyer booted his first - and so far only - one-pointer to win the match at the start of the third period.

With Leeds 40 metres out on the last tackle, Furner’s anguished cry of ‘no’ turned into a whoop of delight as Dwyer hoofed the ball over the bar to seal a famous 21-20 win, Rhinos’ first regular-season victory over Tigers in 12 games.

Dwyer was the 18th player to kick a drop goal for Leeds since 1996, when the sport switched to summer, the others being: Anthony Gibbons (one), Graham Holroyd (eight), Iestyn Harris (six), Tony Kemp (two), Daryl Powell (two), Ryan Sheridan (one), Francis Cummins (two), Kevin Sinfield (31), Danny Ward (one), Danny McGuire (six), Rob Burrow (five), Andrew Dunemann (two), Lee Smith (one), Zak Hardaker (one), Joel Moon (one), Liam Sutcliffe (one) and Richie Myler (one).

‘D’ is also for...Drubbed. Leeds’ worst defeat in terms of points conceded was a 74-6 thrashing at Wigan in a Premiership semi-final in 1992.

Seventy one points is the club’s biggest losing margin, when they were nilled at Wakefield Trinity in 1945.

Queensland hold the record for most points and widest margin as a visiting team at Headingley, from a 58-2 scoreline in 1983.

In Super League, the 66-10 result at Castleford Tigers three years ago was Leeds’ worst loss in terms of points conceded and margin of defeat.

The most points conceded in a home Super League game came in 1996 when Bradford Bulls left Headingley with a 56-18 victory.

The widest margin was Castleford’s 52-12 success 20 years later.

‘D’ is also for...Dentist. Great South African winger Wilf Rosenberg completed his medical studies at Leeds University and was nicknamed the Flying Dentist. He scored 73 tries in just 81 appearances from 1959-61.
