Wasps 41 Leeds Rhinos 51 - Third win on spin bolsters Leeds Rhinos’ play-off hopes
Leeds Rhinos took another big step towards play-off qualification after a third successive Vitality Superleague victory, this time over the Wasps at the Copperbox, writes Megan Worsell.
The Rhinos came out all guns blazing seeking revenge for their narrow defeat against Wasps last time around and made a positive start.
Dan Ryan stuck with the same starting seven as the team that helped Leeds beat Strathclyde Sirens on Sunday night.
Due to a few small mistakes from their rivals, the Rhinos were easily able to make it deep and cut across close to the circle edge, putting them three goals up in the early stages.
Rhinos were dominating the quarter whilst being clinical in their possession and their ability to work the ball up the court smoothly saw the Wasps unable to break the flow of passes.
When Wasps were in possession, they were constantly having to force the ball back as the defensive dynamic of the Rhinos team made their hosts have to work exceptionally hard for every goal.
The second quarter saw a more controlled and active Wasps combination. The Warwickshire side took advantage of every turnover to get the ball under the post, taking them level within the opening minutes of the quarter.
In a goal-for-goal scrap, the flawless connection between Rhea Dixon and Donnell Wallam – perfectly executing her trademark lay-ups – gave the Rhinos a single-goal advantage going into the second half of the match-up, where they continued to dominate further.
Leeds were able to pull ahead with the help of Fi Toner who replaced Emily Hollingsworth as wing attack.
Wasps continued to squander most of their attacks coming from their back three defensive players, due to player of the match Brie Grierson, Nicki Oyesola and Tuaine Keenan applying pressure to their attacking end as Leeds ran out 10-goal victors.
