Sam Zajac hails Leeds Chiefs after stunning performances against Basingstoke Bison
SAM ZAJAC declared himself “immensely proud” of his Leeds Chiefs’ team after their stunning four-point haul against Basingstoke Bison.
“It was probably a bit unexpected, but everybody bought in to what we needed to do,” said Zajac on the long bus ride home to West Yorkshire.
“It just shone through that the guys that were there, they all wanted to be there and believed in themselves and believed in the systems.
“I’m sure Basingstoke feel we might have caught them on an off day, but I like to think that we came in, had a great game-plan and just executed it superbly.
“There were some guys that have probably played lesser roles previously this season that came on leaps and bounds this weekend.
“Charns (Liam Charnock)was unbelievable, it’s the best I’ve seen him play, the same with Ethan (Hehir). Those two played together and looked dangerous every time they were on the ice.”
Zajac was also keen to highlight the contribution of new signing Lewis Houston and not just for his memorable overtime winner in last night’s second game.
“Lewis skated himself into the ground on his first weekend for us,” added Zajac. “He outmuscles a guy to get the loose puck and gets his just rewards with a great goal in the 65th minute.
“I was really, really impressed with his overall game. I knew how good he was but I was probably a bit surprised how quickly and how seamlessly he adapted to this higher level.
“It is the highest level he’s played at and he was one of our standout players - but then they all were. I was proud of every single one of them.”
