Josh Warrington won't look past threat of Mauricio Lara as he eyes unification bouts

The opportunity to become a unified or two-weight world champion is too much for Josh Warrington to allow himself to slip on a Mauricio Lara-shaped banana skin at Wembley Arena on Saturday night.

The Leeds Warrior returns to action for the first time in 15 months, knowing that a victory could pave the way for him to have the biggest 12 months of his career.

The 30-year-old is the number-one ranked featherweight by Ring Magazine. He was crowned IBF champion with a stunning win over Lee Selby in 2018 and followed that up with a successful defence against former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton.

In 2019, two more victories came his way as he defeated Kid Galahad via a split decision and then knocked Sofiance Takoucht out inside two rounds.

However, the last 15 months have been frustrating for the Leeds-born boxer, who has now vacated his IBF title in order to pursue fights against the other kings of the featherweight division.

Defeat is not an option for Warrington and he is prepared for anything Lara throws at him.

"It is a massive moment for me, 15 months is a very long time for any athlete to be out of action," said Warrington.

"We are talking about potential box office shows after this, big unification fights. I know how to handle this pressure.

"I have got a potential banana skin right here in front of me with Mauricio Lara. I was preparing for war. So whatever he brings, I am ready.

“He has no pressure and he is going to come and bring it but I wouldn’t have it any other way. This guy is a real puncher and he has got a better knockout ratio than me. I am treating him like a monster.”
