Revie's rampant Whites went ahead in the 37th minute when a superb flowing move was finished off by a ferocious strike from a tight angle from Allan Clarke.

A precise through ball from Eddie Gray then released Lorimer who arrowed home a powerful low drive to double United's lead three minutes before the break.

But things were to get a whole lot worse for Southampton in the second half and Leeds made it 3-0 on the hour when Clarke doubled his tally after turning his man and sending in a neat finish from inside the box.

Lorimer then bagged his second just four minutes later with a thumping drive from just inside the area after a sublime turn to play on when Johnny Giles looked to have been fouled.

The hat-trick was then completed in the 68th minute as Lorimer ruthlessly capitalised on Southampton losing possession with another pile driver of a low shot from just inside the box.

Leeds continued to pour forward and Jack Charlton then got in on the act when making it 6-0 with a towering header at the back post.

And sublime skill from Gray down the left then led to United's seventh with 12 minutes left as the Scot sent in a lofted cross which was headed back across goal by Lorimer to Mick Jones who could not miss from two yards out.

Leeds has a fantastic story to tell - and the Yorkshire Evening Post has been rooted firmly at the heart of telling the stories of our city since 1890.
