Tony Yeboah scored so many goals for Leeds United that his bonus, which was naturally paid in Yorkshire puddings, had to be cancelled.

The Ghanaian, 54 today, joined the Whites from Eintracht Frankfurt for £3.4 million in January 1995.

He proved a popular addition thanks to his regular goals and a penchant for spectacular volleys - his sensational efforts against Liverpool and Wimbledon are replayed over and over to this day.

When Hunslet firm Nordale Foods Ltd agreed to sponsor the striker, in one of the more unusual commercial deals in footballing history, they had perhaps not banked on just how prolific Yeboah would be.

A YEP story, headlined 'I've had enough Yorkshire puds says United star striker Yeboah' revealed that the bonus of two Yorkshire puddings per goal and one for each of his team-mates, had to be stopped.

It read: "The final whistle has been blown on ace striker Tony Yeboah's Yorkshire pudding bonanza.

"The Leeds United star was on a puddings-for-goals bonus from Hunslet-based Nordale Foods Ltd.

"But the Ghanaian hot-shot's goal grabbing exploits this season have earned him so many puds he had to say: "No more, thanks."

"Yeboah's deal earned him two puds per goal plus one each for his team mates. He has netted 15 times this season so far.

"Today the chairman of Nordal Foods, Michael Land, said: "We have agreed to stop sending Yorkshire puddings to the club.

"Everything has been quite amicable. We sent one delivery of 120 puddings, which shows how well Tony has been doing."

Yeboah was sold to Hamburger SV in September 1997, having scored 32 goals in 66 games.

He returned to Elland Road last year for the club's centenary celebrations and expressed his hope that Leeds would return to the top flight this season.

"The fans and the club deserve to be back in the Premier League, as they have the qualities, a fantastic stadium and fantastic management," he said.

"We are all keeping our fingers crossed that Leeds can come back to the Premier League.”
