10 of the best Leeds Rhinos v Castleford Tigers Super League derbies

In a parallel universe Leeds Rhinos and Castleford Tigers are preparing to meet in an Emerald Headingley derby this week.

On 2020’s original fixture list, before Covid-19 struck, Rhinos were due to face Tigers on Friday, July 10, for the second of three regular-season meetings.

The sides have faced off 58 times in Super League, including play-offs and Rhinos hold the upper hand with 32 wins. Tigers have won 23, alongside three draws.

Here’s a look back at 10 of the teams’ most memorable Super League showdowns.

September 24, 1999. Rhinos 16, Tigers 23 (play-offs).

Graham Murray’s reign as Leeds coach ended as it began, with a home loss to Castleford.

Rhinos hit back from 14-2 down at half-time to level the scores at 16-16, but Danny Orr restored Tigers’ lead with a drop goal and Dale Fritz’s try four minutes from time won it for the visitors.

May 31, 2000. Tigers 18, Rhinos 20.

Castleford led for 78 minutes and were 18-6 up at the break, but Ryan Sheridan - now Tigers’ assistant-coach - crossed to level the scores with 40 seconds remaining and Iestyn Harris landed the winning kick from the left-hand touchline.

August 27, 2004. Rhinos 64, Tigers 12.

Rhinos knew a win would secure the league leaders’ shield for the first time since 1972, with three games in hand.

They delivered with a clinical 12-try performance which included four touchdowns from Chev Walker to inflict Tigers’ worst-ever defeat.

July 16, 2006. Tigers 31, Rhinos 30.

Castleford ended Rhinos’ eight-game winning run thanks to Danny Brough’s drop goal on a scorching afternoon at the Jungle.

Danny Ward, sacked by Leeds weeks before the season began, was among the hosts’ try scorers.

March 7, 2008. Tigers 38, Rhinos 20.

A week after winning the World Club Championship, Leeds suffered a hangover at the Jungle as Castleford picked up their first win of the year and inflicted the visitors’ opening defeat.

Rhinos were 24-6 down at half-time and a hat-trick from Scott Donald could not save them.

May 15, 2009. Tigers 22 Rhinos 24.

Amid thunder, lightning and torrential rain, Rhinos raced 16-0 ahead after as many minutes, but Tigers were level at 22-22 with 10 left.

In the final seconds Michael Shenton was penalised for offside from Danny McGuire’s grubber and Kevin Sinfield won it with the last kick.

July 17, 2014. Rhinos 24, Tigers 24.

Sinfield was sent-off for the first time, eight minutes from time, for butting Luke Dorn.

Against 12 men, Tigers snatched a point when Marc Sneyd converted Grant Millington’s late try.

March 2, 2017. Tigers 66, Rhinos 10.

Castleford ran in a dozen tries, with Greg Minikin and Greg Eden each scoring a hat-trick, in their biggest win over Leeds.

After the game, Rhinos coach Brian McDermott predicted Leeds - who had suffered their heaviest Super League defeat - were still capable of winning the Grand Final.

October 7, 2017. Tigers 6, Rhinos 24 (Grand Final, at Old Trafford).

Danny McGuire, in his final game for Leeds, put on a masterclass as league leaders Castleford froze on the big occasion.

Rhinos led 7-0 at half-time and were 24-0 ahead before Tigers avoided a drubbing with their only try three minutes from time.

March 28, 2019. Rhinos 21, Tigers 20 (after extra-time).

Brad Dwyer’s sensational golden-point drop goal ended Tigers’ six-game unbeaten run at Headingley.

Leeds had led 20-4 after 53 minutes, before Castleford hit back to send the game into extra-time.
