Yorkshire Inter District Union: Impressive Sheffield leapfrog their hosts Halifax-Huddersfield

SHEFFIELD stormed to the top of the Yorkshire Inter District Union League table with a crushing 30-6 defeat of erstwhile leaders Halifax-Huddersfield at Halifax.

The hosts had won all four of their matches going into the contest, but were 10-2 behind after the foursomes and only managed to amass four more points from the singles.

Dan Hartley (Dewsbury) and Ben Adamson (Crow Nest Park) were their only morning winners, their third win in four as a partnership.

Matt Evans (Rotherham) and Jordan Perry (Phoenix) got their third win in three while Wheatley’s Joel Cartlidge and Neil Stones got their second in three by defeating previously unbeaten pair Graham McLean (Meltham) and West End’s Steve Martin.

Jamie Gibson had lost 8&7 in his previous foursomes shift for Sheffield, but with Silkstone club-mate Terry Field won 4&3.

Halifax’s Jamie Smith was the hosts’ only singles victor, getting the better of the hitherto invincible Cartlidge, and Halifax’s Mark Birkett halved as did Jarrad Hazelden (Outlane) to remain unbeaten.

Evans now has five wins in five singles for Sheffield, Wath’s Gary Fullwood four out of four, and Perry four in five.

East Riding 16 York 20

YORK moved up into third place with victory at Hainsworth Park over East Riding.

The home side’s Dan Digby (Brough) and James Woodhead (Hessle) continued their perfect foursomes record in their fourth match in tandem as the morning session was shared 6-6.

Lewis Nicholls, of Ganton, and Hessle’s Lewis Blanchard teamed together for the first time with both enjoying their first foursomes win.

Martin Brown (Pike Hills) and James Duckett (The Oaks) have two from two for York while Damon Coulson (Fulford) enjoyed his maiden win in four when paired for the first time with club-mate Mark Christie, who has a perfect record from two outings.

In the singles, Craig Smith (Fulford) made it two wins from two and Sandburn’s Will Adamson two from three while Rob Heath (Sandburn) was an emphatic 7&6 winner.

Hessle’s Andy Lockwood has two wins from three having beaten Brown to end his run of three successive victories.

James Woodhead now has an impressive 100 per cent record from five singles.

Bradford 25 Teesside 11

BRADFORD had four players making their first appearances at Cleckheaton and swept to victory having been only 7-5 in front at lunch.

Martin Gaffney (Cleckheaton) and South Bradford’s Jack Hall now have three wins in four matches while Blackwell Grange’s Adam Bates and Eaglescliffe’s Tom Smith have won both matches in which they have played together.

Jack Laybourne (Bingley St Ives) is unbeaten in five singles (four wins and a half) and Northcliffe’s Rob Malloy has fared only marginally worse, with four wins and a defeat.

Harrogate 16 Leeds 20

LEEDS made partial amends for their junior side’s defeat to their hosts at Harrogate.

James Gaskell and Sean Naylor had lost their previous foursomes outing 8&7, but won 3&2 here.

Paddy Young and Simon Bradley got their first win, and also the morning’s most emphatic outcome, with a 5&3 victory having lost by the same score previously against Sheffield.

Ed Cowan now has a 100 per cent singles record from three matches but the converse record in foursomes.

Josh Bassitt made it four wins in five and Simon Bradley two from two, Eddie Shoard doing likewise as he produced the biggest afternoon victory on either side, toppling Tom Noble 7&6.

For Leeds, Ben Hutchinson won 6&5, as did Damian Simpson, Peter Owen has two from two and Matt East remains unbeaten after two victories and a half.
