YORKSHIRE need to beat Berks, Bucks & Oxon in their final match of the Senior Men’s County Championship at Robin Hood GC, Solihull, if they are to stand any chance of winning the title for the first time.

They followed their 9-0 thumping of Worcestershire with a narrow 5-4 loss to Devon.

BB&O scored their second win of the tournament as they beat Worcestershire 5½-3½.

The upshot is that BB&O have four points so far, with both Yorkshire and Devon on two points.

All three teams could win the crown, but Yorkshire’s final opponents BB&O have greater control of their destiny.

A win or a half against John Grimbleby’s side will give BB&O the trophy.

However, Yorkshire’s clean sweep against Worcestershire on day one could prove crucial if they manage to overcome BB&O.

Yorkshire captain Grimbleby added: “It’s still in our hands if we win.”

Devon’s win over Yorkshire opened up the tournament and owed much to an excellent singles performance.

They were 2-1 behind after the foursomes, but four of their players won their singles – including Graham Ruth who won 8&6 against Marshall Newman.

However, it was the last game on the course that proved the decider. The two teams were level as Devon’s Philip Lyons reached the 18th tee all square, having lost the 17th to Peter Ward.

But Ward found both trees and a bunker down the 18th, opening the way for Lyons to win the hole - and ultimately decide the overall outcome - with steady play.
