Yorkshire golf: Seniors eye first County Championship success

And the other contenders, Berks, Bucks & Oxon, Devon and Worcestershire, are also seeking their first win in this championship.

They each represent one of England Golf men’s regional groups - the North, South-East, South-West and Midlands, and will take part in a round robin tournament.

County men’s senior champion Stephen East (Moortown), who represented England in this year’s European team championship and senior Home Internationals, will spearhead Yorkshire’s challenge.

Yorkshire qualified at Castle Eden where a splendid 143 from Peter Ward, which won the prize for the best 36-hole score, pointed them towards their national stage debut.

He was ably supported by Chris Mear, Gary Cuthbert, Steve Mason, Barry Downing and Ian Clarke.

Yorkshire’s team over the next three days - which will be captained by John Grimbleby - will be East, Clarke, Mason, Ward, Cuthbert, Mear, Marshall Newman and Chris Jones.

Robin Hood is a Harry Colt designed course and, with its mature trees and lush fairways, has the reputation of being one of the most challenging courses in the West Midlands, with a particularly demanding finish.

Yorkshire open with a match against Worcestershire while Devon take on Berks, Bucks & Oxon.

Each match consists of three morning foursomes, followed by six singles.
