Things are looking good for Leeds’ union side

FOUR members of Leeds’s junior six-man championship winning side were in the senior line-up which ended the Yorkshire Inter District Union League season with an emphatic 28-8 defeat of Teesside.

Two of them – Todd Hughes (Mid Yorkshire) and Wakefield’s George Heath – were making their debuts.

All four of them, the quartet being completed by Howley Hall’s Tom North and Wakefield’s Dan Bradbury, won their singles matches.

Add in the fact that North won 8&6, Bradbury 7&5 and Heath 6&5 – Hughes by a “mere” 3&2 – and it is easy to see why captain Tony Greenhalgh is already looking forward to next season with optimism.

“Providing they work through the winter, which I’m sure they will, it augurs well for next year,” said Greenhalgh, who after a summer of running the union team will look to spend a bit of time on tuning up his own game.

“It was a terrific way to end the season, I was very, very pleased, and the lads all did well.”

After being edged by ultimate winners Sheffield in the first match of the season, Leeds held erstwhile champions York to an 18-8 tie and just went down 19-17 to neighbours Bradford.

Their last four matches then produced wins over East Riding, Harrogate and Teesside, only title-chasers Halifax-Huddersfield lowering their colours since late June.
