Leaving THE politics aside for a mo’, I want to side with Steve Evans and believe him when he says he’s trying to ‘build something’ (at Leeds United).

So what might be produced as supporting evidence?

He does continue to blood youngsters, perhaps even before they’re truly ready. Lewie Coyle is clearly a good player in waiting, but his positional sense needs honing on the evidence of Monday night.

Toumani Diagouraga is a very good signing – the sort of player we’ve been crying out for for several seasons ( I can’t bear to watch Luke Murphy doing his lip-synch style impersonation of a midfielder any more).

And Liam Bridcutt is also a good ‘un’.

Less convincing, and representing the case for the prosecution, is his continued faith in Scott Wootton (I have no idea what he’s good at on a football pitch).

Giuseppe Bellusci – surely the footballer in the Football League with the greatest disparity between self-belief and actual ability, Liam Cooper – shot away by the disarray around him, and Chris Wood – requiring 10 or more chances to actually bag one, and that in a team that doesn’t routinely create 10 or more decent chances in a game.

Replace that lot with better players and the future, at least on the pitch, may be surprisingly fragrant ...

Press pack ‘out to bait’ Evans

I AM convinced that if Steve Evans had been allowed to speak to the media on Monday night he would be out of the job by now!

Steve Evans is passionate about his football job and how his teams play. He would have been livid after that performance and would have spoken from the heart and not the head. He would probably have criticised players and, possibly, Massimo Cellino.

If he hadn’t then the ‘gentlemen of the press’ would have asked questions designed to make him do so, and he would have bitten.

He would then be ridiculed for his reaction and would not have been able to continue as Leeds United FC head coach.

I think some members of the media are annoyed because they were not given the opportunity to make things worse than they are!

In shock over team selection

I’m still in shock with Steve Evans’ team selection on Monday (against Brighton at the Amex).

But that’s no excuse for the players to produce such a dismal display.

And what is this obsession with Scott Wootton? We might as well put a cart horse in defence.

And Sol Bamba isn’t the player we signed.

And Souleymane Doukara can’t hit a barn door without someone alongside him.

We better get a result on Saturday or we are in big trouble.
