Yorkshire Amateur League: Wigton get campaign going with first win

A spate of cup fixtures meant that Wigton’s tie against Rodillian was the only game in the Premier Division.

It was the home side that triumphed, winning 2-1, with Marcus Richardson and Leroy Watson scoring for Wigton. Albert Mandande had put Rodillian on level terms at half-time, but the visitors could not hold out.

The Championship was less impacted by cup ties, with the pick of the games in the second tier being Beeston St Anthony’s 7-0 win against Leeds Independent.

Collingham Juniors OB jumped above opponents Old Batelians and into sixth place with a 4-3 victory.

Richard Metcalfe and Oliver Robinson scored before the hour mark, with Mark Pieri firing in a brace over the last 10 minutes. Jamie Smith scored two for Batelians and Stefan Godbold got one.

St Nicholas thumped Morley Town away from home, beating them 5-0. Jonathan Daniel and Tesfa Walton hit two apiece, with Iain McBurney rounding off the goals.

In a result that belied the league table, Shire Academics – ninth – beat fourth-placed Thornesians 4-0 at home.

Division One saw Calverley United jump up to first in the table, overhauling Drighlington. They achieved that by beating Dewsbury Rangers away from home.

Grangefield OB Reserves also climbed above Drighlington with a 6-0 win against St Bedes.

Tyler Gill was the star performer on the day, bagging a hat-trick in the second-half. Daniel Cuff and Simon Yeadon were also on the scoresheet for the away side.

Rothwell Reserves also beat Amaranth 2-1 at home, with Ben Wilkinson scoring Amaranth’s goal.

Farsley Celtic Juniors Reserves extended their lead at the top of Division Two to seven points with a 3-1 win against Old Centralians. It was a late showing from Farsley, who were 1-0 down until Tyler Cooper’s 80th minute strike. Sam Ford then scored a brace in the last five minutes to earn three points.

Churwell Lions lost 2-0 to Huddersfield YMCA, Old Batelians Reserves beat Old Collegians 3-2 and Woodkirk Valley won 7-1 against Sandal Wanderers.

The pick of the Division Three action saw Leeds City OB win 5-1 against Thornesians Reserves to move level with Kippax Athletic at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, Shire Academics managed a comprehsive 8-2 win against Beeston Juniors Reserves in Division Four to move up to second.

Leeds Medics and Dentists kept up their league form as they progressed to the second round of the Marflitt Trophy.

Leeds Modernians were the victims of the Medics hammering as they lost 8-0.

Bradley Chambers and John Forrest each scored a brace. Alex Monk, Niall Robinson and Sammy Bzeu were also on the scoresheet for the away side, while Modernians contributed an own goal to the Medics’ cause.

It was not any easier for Middleton Park as they were trounced 13-0 by Alwoodley FC in the other game from round one.

Graham Shaw put in a lively display, bagging five to send Alwoodley on their way. Tom Rawson, James Turner and Callum Armstrong also contributed a brace apiece. Both Aaron Robinson and Owen Smith also hit solitary goals.

Ealandians lost 2-1 in the second round to Stanningley OB. Tom Stewart gave Stanningley the lead until Mark Heppenstall pegged them back, with super substitute Ash Williamson scoring the winner.

The only quarter-final tie saw Farnley Sports beat Beeston Juniors 8-3. Adam Butterworth scored a hat-trick for the hosts, along with braces from Shane Gaunt and Andy Punter, and a single strike from Curtis Lewis.

A cracker in the reserve team Hancock Cup saw Wigton Moor Reserves earn a 3-2 win against Churwell Lions Reserves through goals from Chris Lone, Jordan Lee and Donald Walker.

The quarter-finals saw Morley Town lose 4-0 to Stanningley OB Reserves, while Ealandians Reserves beat Trinity OB Reserves 6-5.
