Yorkshire Amateur League: Celtic go top after five-game win run

This weekend saw an impressive 5-2 win over Trinity & All Saints COB, despite not having their usual flare.

Quadruple goalscorer Danny Lyons had a fantastic game, scoring the last four goals after Craig Farrand starting the influx of goals with a freekick of great quality.

Although Trinity endeavoured to bounce back in the second half, they couldn’t quite match the pace of Farsley and remain in ninth place, whilst Farsley have leapfrogged Leeds Medics into first place, due to their match being postponed.

Stanningley OB, in third place, enjoyed an emphatic 6-0 win over Wigton Moor, who are battling relegation.

Bradley Francis-White scored a hat-trick, with the other three goals coming from Bradley Sharrocks, substitute Ashley Williamson and James Allen with his 14th goal in all league and cup games this season.

Stanningley are now on four consecutive wins at home, but their next fixture is against Division Five East Ardsley Wanderers in the quarter-final of the Marflitt Trophy.

Wigton Moor face seventh-place Grangefield OB away from home this coming weekend.

In Division One, Grangefield OB Reserves beat Colton Athletic 3-1 away from home, as they battled second from bottom for the top spot.

Tom Menaldino opened the scoring with a screamer in the 10th minute, followed by two from Jordan Thrackray, assisted by James Kemp in the 81st minute. Grangefield are top of the table by a point, but second-place Drighlington have two matches in hand.

For Colton, this was their fifth defeat out of seven home games, gaining only six points from 12 matches played.

They face fourth-place Rothwell Reserves this weekend, whilst Grangefield play Wheelwright OB away.

Gildersome Spurs OB are storming their way up the Division Two table, with a notable 10 wins out of 12 and a 6-1 victory over fourth-place Woodkirk Valley. This was Woodkirk’s second defeat of the season. However, they have a chance this weekend to redeem themselves against fifth-place Churwell Lions.

Stephen Wales scored a hat-trick for Gildersome, despite not being in the starting line-up.

The others came from Gildersome’s leading goalscorer (on 22 goals this season) Mike Hall scoring two and Aidan McCormack providing the third.

At the bottom of the table, Old Centralians beat Leeds Medics & Dentists IV with a 3-0 victory, their best of the season. Medics still haven’t won at home in four matches, and face a tough test against Churwell Lions this weekend.

Four-star Churwell Lions Reserves saw off FC Headingley 4-2 to go two places clear of Saturday’s opponents on the league ladder in ninth.

Luke Gough scored two for the Lions, with the other goals coming from Adam Megson and Luke Denby for the home side.

Both teams are battling towards the wrong end of Division Three, but Churwell also have two games in hand over Headingley.

In Division Four, Ealandians III enjoyed their first victory of the season, beating Beeston Juniors Reserves 6-3 away from home.

Ealandians are no longer at the bottom of the table and now have seven points, but are still trailing five points behind 10th-placed Horsforth St Margarets Saturday Reserves.

Beeston started the match well and gained a 2-0 lead early on, but three goals from Ealandians first-team manager Wayne Crossley in two minutes, followed by goals from Dean Avis, Wayne Cummings and Adam May, sealed the win for Ealandians.

North Leeds obtained a much-needed three points against Leeds City OB Reserves, with two goals from Chad Newman and Steven Mitchell for the home side.

A disappointing result for Leeds City OB, who are second in the table, level on points with top of the table Alwoodley FC III.

The teams face each other this coming weekend in a battle for the top spot of Division Four.

Three high-scoring games were played out in Division Five.

Rodillian Reserves beat Thornesians III 7-1 at home, Shire Academics III beaten 4-3 away to East Ardsley Wanderers and Dewsbury Rangers FC Reserves defeat Trinity & All Saints COB Reserves 4-1 at home.

The teams fall consecutively down the table with East Ardsley in second, Dewsbury in third, Rodillian in fourth and Trinity in fifth place in their ‘mini league’.

In Division Six, top of the table Norristhorpe Reserves defeated seventh-placed Huddersfield Amateur Reserves 3-1 at home.
