Women's football: Four-star Hemsworth take over at the top

The league leaders ended a run of two back-to-back defeats to triumph over bottom of the table Gledhow. Hemsworth broke the deadlock through Helena Kieley before a deep cross from the right was fumbled leaving Ebony Dennis with a tap in, then a thunderous freekick from Nikki Needham gave Hemsworth a 3-0 lead at the interval. Unfortunately for Gledhow they did not thoroughly test the Hemsworth keeper and the visitors capitalised with Jade Stones rounding off the scoring with her first goal for the club.

Ossett Town Firsts’ 2-2 draw with Altofts allowed Hemsworth to gain the upper hand in the title race. Caroline Omboyi and Danielle Sidebottom registered for Ossett as the two sides shared the spoils.

Brighouse Athletic beat Bradford Park Avenue 6-1 to move up to third, with the goals coming from V Mladenovic, Ashley Butler, Paige Green, Nichola Holdsworth and two from Sheridan Drake.

Tingley Athletic Firsts beat Brayton Belles 3-0 to move up to fourth. Silsden Firsts remain unbeaten in the First Division and their 3-0 victory over Hebden Royd United moves them up to third.

Battyeford Belles Firsts beat Republica Internationale 2-0, after goals from L Wardman and Bethany Winsor.

Brighouse Town Development moved back to the top of the Second Division with a 4-0 victory over Battyeford Belles Reserves.

In the Third Division, Wigton Moor extended their lead at the top as they thrashed Skipton Town 12-0. Juliana Eigbe bagged a hat-trick, Sarah Smart, Megan Reece and Aislinn O’Gorman all scored twice, whilst Charlotte Leddy, Gurdeep Nahl and Rebecca Smart all netted once.

Ossett Town Reserves suffered a 2-1 defeat against Boroughbridge with Ossett’s goal coming from Ashlea Cunningham.

Leeds Ladies dropped down to fifth in the Northern Division One Premier League after a 3-0 defeat at Stockport County.

Leeds Ladies FC had nothing to show for their dominance of possession at home to Stockport, who triumphed 3-0.

Carly Hoyle impressed at right-back as did Zoe Docherty in midfield.

The U16s out-gunned Brighouse 10-2 on their return from an eight-week lay-off. Jessica Tate and Tippi Harrison scored hat-tricks, with further goals coming from Sophie Vickers and Georgie Taylor.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL

For the second time this season Leeds Schools FA Under-11s A progressed in a cup competition with a 1-0 win against Sheffield on home soil.

Sheffield had one or two half-chances before the first real opening fell to Charlie Tokarski but the chance was missed.

Tom Douglass was back to his best in assisting Leo Diffy and Alfie Wright at the back, intercepting a number of attempted through balls from the Sheffield midfield.

Sam Appleyard, Charlie T and Max Pearson worked tirelessly in the middle of the park without seeing much of the ball.

Up front Both Bradley Wood and Bradley Pride were unlucky on a number of occasions not to unshackle themselves from the strong-tackling, tight-marking Sheffield defenders and carve out a clear-cut opportunity. Harvey Coleman in the Leeds goal produced three fine saves before Leeds took the lead.

A looping through ball from the right midfield, searching out the run of Wood was met at full stretch from the keeper who, under pressure, could only spill the ball to the oncoming Ben Moss, who fired home.

Leeds held on to claim a narrow victory and progress to the semi-finals where they will take on East Riding.

Leeds Schools FA Under-11s B put in an impressive performance to defeat York 5-1 in the West Yorkshire League.

Leeds took the lead when Luca had a great strike which was saved, but Charlie was well-positioned to finish from close range.

York responded strongly and quickly with an equaliser, but Leeds remained in control and Oli P, in space on the edge of the box, finished clinically to give Leeds a 2-1 lead.

Alasdair then put in a cross from the right and, with Luca putting the keeper under pressure, that created an opportunity for Oli B to strike for Leeds’ third goal, finishing well with his left foot in to the bottom corner.

Leeds made it 4-1 when Oli P smashed the ball home after Charlie B’s header was parried by the goalkeeper.

The scoring was completed whem Oli P was again on hand to complete his hat-trick after Luca’s shot was parried.

Elsewhere, Leeds City Boys Under-14s played their first game for five weeks when they travelled to Humberside to take on their East Riding counterparts in a League fixture.

They got the perfect start with an early goal from Lewis Branton. This settled them down but overall the game was quite even. They increased the lead with an own goal and a third goal followed from Charlie Heath.

The 3-0 half-time scoreline seemed comfortable but East Riding gave as good as they got.

And so it proved in the second half as their opponents replied twice to put the game in the balance. Leeds remained composed however, and completed the scoring with Branton’s second to make the final score 4-2 to Leeds.

The victory made it two wins from two in the league with plenty of games to come.

Josh Wicks’s second-half strike was enough to give Harrogate & Craven Under-14s Schoolboys a 1-0 win over York to put them two points clear at the top of the league.

With both sides lacking match practice, it was York who started the stronger in their quest to make amends for last month’s heavy defeat at the hands of their opponents.

James Denton had to be alert as the visitors mounted several early attacks on goal. But as the tie progressed Harrogate’s solid midfield base handed freedom to Max Gould, Ewan May and Will Powell, as they were able to press deep into the opposition’s halfbut without reward.

The introduction of Jack Parkinson and Sam Newsome gave the hosts an extra dimension in the second half. The opening and decisive goal finally came in the 49th minute when Wicks collected Lucas Abusin’s lay-off and drove the ball past the outstretched keeper.

Kirkstall Crusaders Under-15s travelled to Horsforth St Margaret’s with only 11 players, but they still managed to come away with a 5-3 victory thanks to goals from Caleb Masiyiwa (4) and Kasim Janghir.

Three outstanding saves from goalkeeper Travis Byrne and the constant battling and running of Masiyiwa put them in contention for man of the match but that honour went to Louis Hollick for a near-faultless display at right-back.
