United had given themselves hope of achieving a positive result at Molineux after Gjanni Alioski netted in the 48th minute to reply to first-half strikes from Barry Douglas and Ivan Cavaleiro for the hosts.

But Vieira was sent off after receiving his second booking on the hour mark for a late tackle on Diogo Jota and Wolves put themselves out of sight with a fine finish from Jota in the 72nd minute, a goal followed by a Helder Costa penalty four minutes later.

Vieira will now be suspended for Saturday’s Yorkshire derby at Barnsley as he serves a one-match ban.

The 19-year-old midfielder took to his personal Twitter page after the game to say: “Just want to apologise to the fans and my team mates for my red card tonight.

“I made the wrong decision at a crucial time in the game.

“We will come back stronger as a team and I will make up for my mistake when I get back on the pitch. #Together”

Whites head coach Thomas Christiansen said he too would have to shoulder part of the blame for the sending off.

Vieira had been booked midway through the first half, also for a foul on Jota, and Christiansen hinted that he should have taken the midfielder off given the prospect of a second yellow card.

“Everyone has to learn from that,” said Christiansen.

“He has to learn from that, I have to learn from that because he had made some fouls there. Perhaps I should have changed him.

“I can take my responsibility also.”
