Schools/Juniors: Leeds Schools' storming cup display sinks Seasiders

The Whites spurned several early chances before Kron Abdiu added a bit of composure to the proceedings by dispatching a neat left-foot finish from the edge of the box into the far-bottom corner.

Bradley Wood then latched onto a perfectly weighted Abdiu through-ball to fire home off the inside of the post before Wood’s vicious strike on the rebound brought up the visiting side’s third.

Scarborough forced a decent save from Whites ’keeper Harvey Coleman but Leeds added three more goals in the second period of the game through Ben Moss with a brace and then Bradley Pride.

Pride then turned provider to allow Wood to complete his treble at the start of the second period as Leeds made it 7-0 before Wood quickly added his fourth and Leeds’ eighth.

Leo Diffey went close to scoring from distance but Leeds would still add three more, through Sam Appleyard, Charlie Tokarski and then Ben Redshaw with arguably the goal of the game.

Redshaw danced through the Scarborough back line to finish with confidence not long before the final whistle and thoughts then turned to the smell of the locally reared bacon butties.

Leeds City Boys under-14s fell to a 3-1 defeat in a league game at York where a lack of key players took its toll.

The Whites travelled without three important players, including both joint top scorers, through injury and illness.

A couple of others were suffering from a bug but started as numbers were low.

On a wet pitch, the first half was end to end with neither side on top, although the deadlock was broken by York with a well constructed move ending in a calm finish. Leeds had plenty of the game and had two efforts denied by a great save to Kian Linley’s shot and an effort that shaved the post from Kyran Sharlotte.

Leeds came out and started to dominate possession and territory and the first time York got to the Leeds’ area they scored again with a low shot across goal.

At the other end, numerous chances failed due to good saves by the York ’keeper and other efforts hit narrowly wide.

Eventually the pressure told with clever midfield play leading to a thunderous long-range shot from Matty Kyle that gave the goalkeeper no chance.

Just as Leeds had fought back, a cross from York rebounded off the goalkeeper straight to a York attacker who tapped it home.

Harry Sykes and Kyran Sharlotte both had excellent games in defence snuffing out most York attacks and all the team played well in difficult conditions.

The rest of the game saw Leeds pressure through goalmouth scrambles and shots over and wide, but the luck wasn’t with them.

JUNIOR GIRLS

BRIGHOUSE Juniors Blue Under-11s Girls maintained their 100 per cent record in the newly formed Division Two of the West Riding Girls League with an 11-0 thrashing of visiting Farsley Ladies.

Player of the match Emily Kilroy scored four with Sidone Malcher-Akesson netting a hat-trick.

Further goals were added by Sophie Dallagher, Freya Kikuts, Abi Conway and Sophie Charlesworth.

Brighouse Juniors Yellow Under-11s, meanwhile, suffered a 9-2 loss in their cup quarter-final match at home to an in-form Guiseley Blues.

The home side went 1-0 up early in the first half with a great goal by Kaidy Firth.

Guiseley got back into it with a couple of good goals before Phoebe Pickard got one back for the Yellows.

Had it not been for a great goalkeeping display by the Guiseley stopper, Mia Harris could have bagged herself a hat-trick, but it was the away side that led 4-2 at the break.

Guiseley then stepped up a level in the second half and added a further five goals. Goalkeeper Georgina Newcombe pulled off a number of fantastic saves to prevent Guiseley hitting double figures while player of the match Deanna Dixon and Lily Butterworth also particularly excelled.

Elsewhere, Brighouse Juniors U16s Girls made the long trip to Beckwithshaw Saints knowing that County Cup progress was already assured, with the hosts unable to form an eligible team.

But the visitors suffered a 2-0 loss despite good midfield performances from Lauryn Smith and player of the match Phoebe Durkin. Lauren Naylor worked hard on the wing, but Brighouse were unable to create for strikers Emily Dooley and Emily Lovett. The hosts took the lead after a defensive lapse in concentration, but Lovett was unlucky not to equalise before the break.

The highlight of the first half was a superb diving save from stand-in ’keeper Tiegan Rowley.

Brighouse improved in the second half with a more solid defensive display, highlighted by Beth Thompson, Niamh Davis, Brooke Whitworth and debutant Caitlin Charlton-Shaw.
