Paul Cox claims first win in charge of Guiseley

Guiseley recorded their second league win of the season with a 4-2 home victory over Solihull Moors after an enthralling battle.

This match was decided after a frantic few minutes when Guiseley went 2-1 up, Solihull equalised then Guiseley went back to 3-2 up before John Rooney decided the game with a fine free-kick.

The hosts had the first chance when a long throw by Darren Holden found Kevan Hurst, who on the half-volley, fired just wide.

Guiseley kept the pressure on and soon took the lead and in some style with Lee Molyneux seeing his effort fly into the top corner.

With half-time approaching Moors saw a throw-in catch the wind, it bobbled in the area and fell to Oladapo Afolayan who saw his low drive from outside the area go past several bodies and into the bottom right-hand corner.

Moors then broke away in added time with Akwasi Asante forcing Guiseley keeper Jonny Maxted into a smart save.

The second half started with a midfield battle then broke into life with three goals in three minutes.

Firstly, on his debut from Stevenage, Guiseley loanee Rowan Liburd used pace and power to score.

Moors equalised immediately with a loose ball falling to Afolayan to double his total.

Then Jake Lawlor was found from a free-kick moments later and his shot on the volley trickled over the line.

The action didn’t stop though and Guiseley keeper Jonny Maxted was called upon on three occasions each time making an important save.

Then Rooney got his goal just before the end.

On his first league victory as Lions boss, Paul Cox said: “It was just crucial that we got this one. We showed great spirit to get back to 2-2 and not let it get to us. We have to build on this, it feels so good to get that first win in the league for myself here.”

Elsewhere in the National League, George Waring struck on his debut but FC Halifax Town had to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to Torquay United.

Harrogate Town stayed one point clear of Salford City at the top of National North following a 2-2 home draw against Leamington.

Junior English gave the Midlanders a surprise lead before putting through his own net after George Thomson’s equaliser. But a Rob Thompson-Brown penalty meant the spoils were shared.

Bradford Park Avenue are currently enduring their worst run of the season, as a 2-1 defeat at Darlington left them without a win in five matches. Oli Johnson’s 89th-minute header was their only response to a Graham Kelly own goal and Josh Gillies’ free kick.
