Patrick Bamford makes Leeds United comeback as Izzy Brown steps up return

The marquee summer signing was initially ruled out for four months after picking up a posterior cruciate ligament injury two months ago in the Professional Development League against Bristol City at Elland Road.

Bamford though was named on the bench for the Premier League Cup tie in Northumberland against Newcastle United as he completed his return ahead of schedule.

The 25-year-old came through the second half and gained some much needed minutes alongside Whites loanee Izzy Brown who also stepped up his recovery as he completed 80 minutes of the fixture.

The duo came through the clash unscathed with Brown growing into the game after the break causing the hosts all sorts of problems cutting in from the left wing.

Bamford also looked sharp as his knee was tested on a number of occasions but despite their involvement Carlos Corberan's side fell to a 2-0 defeat.

United put in a strong performance and could count themselves unlucky to leave on the wrong side of the scoreline as the Magpies earned all three points in Group H.

A first half goal from Elias Sorenson and a stoppage time strike from Adam Wilson was enough to see off United who now have a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the next round of the competition.

Bamford said afterwards: "I felt alright out there tonight. It was nice to get some minutes in the legs, and hopefully I can get back into the first team soon.”
