New recruit Douglas targeting back to back promotions with Leeds United set up 'similar' to Wolves

Scotland international left back Douglas has become United's first permanent signing of the summer with the 28-year-old leaving Wolves to sign for Leeds on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The Whites are now looking to make further signings before both the start of the Championship season next weekend and the August 9 transfer deadline and Douglas can see similarities between Leeds and last year's league winners Wolves.

Asked by LUTV about the prospect of achieving back to back promotions to the Premier League, Douglas said: "It would be nice, that's the plan and hopefully we can achieve that. Wolves obviously took the decision to let me know that I wasn't going to be part of their plans which was a bit hard to take at first but life goes on.

"And then I found out about the interest from Leeds and the project here is similar to what was going on last year at Wolves. It's very exciting so that's what made the decision for me to come here.

"There's some massive clubs in the Championship, the same as last year.

"It's going to be a tough opening but Leeds are a big club with big ambitions and I'm sure we will do well.

"Leeds are a massive club and I am sure the fans want it to be back in the top flight where it rightfully belongs so hopefully I can bring some success to the club as well as enjoying the journey."

Despite being a left back, Douglas topped the Championship's assists charts last season - creating 14 assists and also netting five goals.

One of those came when the Scot netted a stunning free-kick as Wolves beat United 4-1 in the league clash at Molineux in November.

Douglas smiled: "I am sure the fans weren't happy at me last year but hopefully I can replicate that this season and get involved in the goals and assists."

The defender will now return to his home in the Midlands to collect his possessions and say his goodbyes with the 28-year-old anticipating that he will start training with Leeds on Monday and the Scot is relishing the prospect of working with new Argentine head coach Bielsa.

The left back feels his spells abroad at Polish side Lech Poznań and Turkish outfit Konyaspor will stand him in particularly good stead to adapt to a different style of football.

He added: "I think the way that the manager is speaking of playing is going to suit me down to a tee so hopefully we can compliment each other and have some success.

"I think also with my time abroad it will be easier to adapt to the new coach and his way of playing.

"I'll just try and help out as much as I can but ultimately the boys will get on and teach me about the place.

"Tomorrow I will go and get organised, go and get my things and say goodbye to my friends and colleagues at Wolves and then ultimately it will probably be Monday that I am back in and hopefully get going.

"It's just exciting and exciting times. I'm just looking forward to getting going now and meeting the guys."

Asked if he was aware of the long tradition of talented Scottish footballers thriving at Leeds, Douglas smiled: "I have been made aware of it so there's no pressure!

"I've been told all the Scotsman that have left a legacy here and hopefully I can have the same effect."
