York City v Leeds United Women highlights: Abbie Brown strike earns point for Whites
It was the Minsterbelles who came out on top when the two teams met in the FA Women’s National League Cup last month – but with the Whites seeking an escape from the fourth tier, Wednesday evening’s game will have far greater significance.
Only one Division One North side will earn promotion to the Northern Premier come the end of the season, but it’s so far, so good for United. Since Rick Passmoor returned to manage Leeds this summer, his side have won five of their seven league games and are currently one point clear of second-placed Durham Cestria.

With attendance expected to approach two thousand fans, this Yorkshire derby is set to be a tasty affair – and you can follow the action right here on our live blog….
York City v Leeds United LIVE
Key Events
- Kick off at 7.45pm
- Live updates from the LNER Community Stadium
Working it out...
In his technical area, Leeds boss Rick Passmoor has his specs on, studiously making notes in a little black book.
GOAL for York
Jess Holder makes no mistake this time. Assist from Milly Ash.
City have started the half on the front foot and are well-deserving of their lead.
BIG CHANCE for York
Alice Hughes steals the ball from a Leeds goal-kick, drives forward and plays Jess Holder through on goal - it’s on target, but Carrie Simpson makes the save.
HALF-TIME
It’s goalless at the LNER Community Stadium but my goodness... what a game it’s been so far.
In the opening stages Leeds were looking dominant, but faded as the hosts built their way into the game - though two HUGE chances for Leeds just before the ref blew for half time.
Big pitch here and with both teams going at it 100% for the result it could turn into a battle of mentalities in the second half.
Rebecca Jeffels makes a goalline clearance to deny Leeds’ forward Macy Ellis the opener on the stroke of half time. Just when you think the play is winding down for the interval.... seeing a lot of desire from both sides.
GREAT SAVE
Olivia Smart is no stranger to a first-class free-kick delivery - and tonight is no different. It loops high and is set to sneak under the bar, but Rebecca Sidwell tips it over.
No way through for Leeds
Emily Cassidy is putting paid to any hopes of a Leeds attack in the late stages of the first half. A couple of great interceptions from the ex-Whites defender.
Big chance for York
Jess Holder wows the crowd with some tricksy feet, wriggling into space to send a ball into Felicity Jones. She meets it at the near post, but takes a heavy first touch and the angle is too tight to give her side the lead. Ten minutes of the half left.
York attempt
Milly Ash has a go from range which has ‘keeper Simpson scrambling momentarily - but the shot is wide.
Class from Alice Hughes
The hosts have been coming into it more in the last ten minutes but as Abbie Brown starts to threaten with her quick feet, former Leeds midfielder Alice Hughes is there to dispossess her ex-teammate. Such a calm presence for the Minsterbelles.
HUGE chance for York
A lovely ball from Jeffels sets Holder off on the right wing. She plays it into the box, where there’s three red shirts - but somehow Leeds midfielder Danby gets there first and hussles it away from danger.
Brown is first to a cut-back and some of the crowd celebrate as it seems to have hit the back of the net.... but it rattles the hoardings behind the goal.
Feisty derby
It’s a good, competitive game this, with both team’s players keen to make their mark. Fans have not been pleased to see play continue after one or two challenges this evening, so a good call by the referee to pull out a yellow to stem some of the aggression.
Some pace to these opening exchanges
Sarah Danby is furious with Abbie Brown for letting the ball run out for a throw when she could have kept it in in the final third. I’d forgive her, though, as Brown has just absolutely paced it upfield. It’s full-pelt still with 14 minutes gone.
Unlucky for York
Nikki Brown is racing through the lines, plays a neat one-two with Holder which puts her one-on-one with the ‘keeper - but it comes at her too fast and it strikes her arm. First real chance for the hosts.
