The Whites prised forward Joe Gelhardt away from the Latics last summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £1m, and the 18-year-old has shone for the Under 23s this season at Thorp Arch.

Leeds were also keeping a close eye on a number of Wigan's other talented youngsters during the previous transfer window, including 17-year-old McGurk.

The YEP understands Leeds made an enquiry about him again last week, but with his contract due to run out at the end of the current season, are unlikely to make a substantial bid before the January transfer window closes.

Wigan are determined to hang on to the teenager, who could find himself playing first team football in League One if he stays put.Paul Kendrick of the YEP's sister title the Wigan Observer said: "McGurk has been in outstanding form for the Under 18s side this term, and may even be fast-tracked into the first team set-up after the squad lists are confirmed for the second half of the campaign - when he wouldn't 'count' for quota purposes."

The Latics hope that a successful takeover and an escape from relegation to League Two could convince McGurk to stay put beyond the 2020/21 campaign.
