The 2003-04 season was one to forget for Leeds United as they finished 19th in the Premier League, relegated after a fairly successful 14-year stint in the top flight, in the wake of the club’s financial crisis. We take a look at the starting XI that finished Leeds United’s season to forget, and see where they are now:
7. Dominic Matteo
Dominic Matteo was made captain of the Whites when Rio Ferdinand left for Manchester United in the summer of 2002. Following Leeds’ relegation in 2004, Matteo moved to Blackburn Rovers before retiring at Stoke City in 2009, aged 35.
8. Salomon Olembe
Salomon Olembe's time at Leeds was a short one, as he made just 13 appearances on loan for the Whites before returning to Marseille. It was a loan spell to forget for the retired Cameroon international, who hung up his boots in 2010, aged just 29.
9. Jason Wilcox
Jason Wilcox moved to Leeds in 1999 and scored on his debut for the Whites. He scored a total of six goals and registered five assists in 100 games for Leeds. He soon moved on following Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League, joining Leicester City in 2004 before moving to Blackpool two years later, soon retiring after his release from the Seasiders.
10. James Milner
James Milner spent just two years at his boyhood club, which included a short spell on loan at Swindon Town, before being sold to Newcastle United following Leeds’ relegation to the Championship. Now he's a Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool.
11. Alan Smith
Smith made 215 appearances for Leeds, the most he made at any club, scoring an impressive 53 goals and registering four assists in his six years at his boyhood-club. As a result of Leeds’ financial struggles following their relegation in 2004, Smith was sold to rivals Manchester United for £7m. He played just 93 times for the Red Devils, scoring 12, before moving to Newcastle in 2007. He then joined MK Dons, and afterwards moved to Notts County in 2014 before being released in 2018. He announced his retirement soon after that.
