Back in January 2018, Thomas Christiansen's side were beaten 2-1 at Newport County, who scored two goals inside the final 15 minutes to cancel out Gaetano Berardi’s ninth-minute opener. Frustrations were compounded when Samu Saiz was shown a red card in injury time.
And ahead of the Whites’ latest visit to a fourth division club, we’ve decided to look at the United starting XI from that third round shock, and find out what each player is up to now.

7. Kalvin Phillips
No explanation needed for Leeds United and England’s midfield general. He remains an ever-present in Bielsa’s starting 11, and long may it continue. Photo: George Wood

8. Mateusz Klich
No sooner than 12 days later (after Leeds’ defeat to Newport), Klich was loaned to FC Utrecht for the remainder of the 2017/18 season. It looked to be the beginning of the end for the Pole at Elland Road, until Bielsa walked through the door. Photo: Stu Forster

9. Pawel Cibicki
Cibicki struggled to make any kind of impact for Leeds, so it was no surprise to see Bielsa loan him to Molde soon after his appointment. The 26-year-old had further loans at IF Elfsborg and ADO Den Haag before joining Pogon Szczecin in January 2020. Photo: Stu Forster

10. Jay-Roy Grot
The Dutchman’s inclusion in Leeds’ 25-man Premier League squad was a huge surprise, especially given he has never appeared under Bielsa. Even since then, the 22-year-old has been nowhere near the Whites’ matchday squad as his contract ticks down to the summer. Photo: MYO KYAW SOE

11. Pierre-Michel Lasogga
The German striker managed to hit double figures during his time on loan at Elland Road from Hamburg. Now, the 29-year-old is playing in the Middle East for Qatari outfit Al-Arabi, where he has been since 2019. Photo: Stu Forster
