'What're they doing?' - Paul Merson left baffled after Leeds United defeat vs Wolves, hails 'phenomenal' Whites talent

Paul Merson has admitted that he was left baffled by what Wolves were doing differently to nullify Leeds United in their Premier League clash on Friday evening.

The Whites drew a blank in their 1-0 defeat at Molineux, with a desperately unfortunate Illan Meslier own goal ultimately deciding the match.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men managed 17 shots on goal to their hosts’ 15 over the course of the 90 minutes, but Merson was quick to suggest that they didn’t look their usual threatening selves.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, he said: “Very fortunate with the goal, but it’s the first time I’ve really watched Leeds and I was watching thinking, ‘What’re they doing differently here, Wolves?’.

"Leeds weren’t the same – they weren’t the same team.

"This [the goal] is unbelievable. He's bang unlucky the keeper, but sometimes you need a bit of luck.

"If I’m being honest, I was disappointed in the game. I love watching Leeds play and I was quite disappointed last night – maybe because Phillips wasn’t playing.”

The former Arsenal man went on to heap praise on Brazilian winger Raphinha for his quality from dead ball situations.

He added: “The one thing you could take as a positive, Raphinha’s set-plays were phenomenal.

"I mean, some of his balls in, into what I would call no-man’s land.

"There were free-kicks where you think, ‘They’re not a good place to have them’, and the service was phenomenal. They should score.

"If one of them go either way of the goalie, they might go on and win the game by three or four, but it wasn’t the Leeds that I’ve been watching.”
