Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Liz Truss promised to channel the spirit of former Leeds United favourite Don Revie in her quest for the keys to number 10. She ended up getting them in September but has today resigned.

Her tenure in charge has lasted just 44 days which coincidentally is the same amount of time as Brian Clough lasted during his short stint at the helm of the Whites. Truss is the shortest serving PM in UK history.

The former Foreign Secretary grew up in Leeds and her father was an emeritus professor of Mathematics at the University of Leeds. Before she beat Rishi Sunak to become Prime Minister, she spoke at Elland Road in July and referenced a football great: “I do want us to channel the spirit of Don Revie because we need to win. And, my friends, we can win against Keir Starmer, who is a patronising, plastic patriot.”

Truss added: “I remember as a teenager getting the bus into Leeds city centre because there was no other alternative. I’m afraid, my friends, it’s not much better now. Leeds is still the largest city in Europe without its own metro network, and I would work to fix that.”

Revie joined Leeds as a player in 1958 and went on to play 80 games, chipping in with 12 goals, before getting the manager’s job in 1961. He went on to spend 13 years in the dugout with the Yorkshire club and won the First Division twice, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
