Leeds United will renew acquaintances with Valencia this summer as they host the La Liga side at Elland Road in a pre-season friendly. The announcement provokes memories of the 2000-01 Champions League semi-finals when the two sides went head to head over two legs for the chance to take on Bayern Munich in the final.
The first leg at Elland Road finished goalless, but it was Valencia, boasting the likes of Gaizka Mendieta, John Carew and current Mestalla boss Ruben Baraja, who progressed by seeing off Leeds 3-0 in the return fixture. The two sides have met since, playing out a friendly in 2004, which ended 2-2.
With the upcoming clash on August 3 in mind, though, we took a look back at what happened to the starting XI that took on Valencia in the first leg of the Champions League semis on May 2, 2001.

7. Lee Bowyer
Bowyer scored five goals during Leeds' 2000-01 Champions League campaign with efforts coming against Besiktas, Barcelona, Anderlecht and Lazio, but he couldn't find the back of the net against Valencia. He left Leeds in 2003 to join West Ham United before going on to represent Newcastle, West Ham once more, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town. He went into management following the end of his playing days and after spells with Charlton and Birmingham City, he now presides over the Montserrat national team. | AFP via Getty Images

8. Olivier Dacourt
The France international left Leeds in 2003 to join Roma after a falling out with Terry Venables. He went on to win two Serie A titles with Inter Milan before making a brief return to the Premier League with Fulham. His career ended in 2010 after a spell with Belgian outfit Standard Liege. 9. Harry Kewell
The manner of Kewell's exit to Liverpool in 2003 did not go down well, it's fair to say, with the Australian taking a public swipe at the club on his way out. After winning the Champions League and the FA Cup, he angered Leeds fans even more when he joined Galatasaray in 2008. Spells at Melbourne Victory, Al-Gharafa and Melbourne Heart followed before he stepped into management. Now 45, Kewell is in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos having spent time in charge of Watford U23s, Crawley, Notts County, Oldham and Barnet, while he also spent a brief period on the coaching team at Celtic. | Getty Images

10. Alan Smith
Smith scored 18 goals over the course of the 2000-01 season, making it his most prolific season with his hometown club. After making 228 appearances for the Whites, he made the move to Manchester United, where he spent three years before going on to play for Newcastle United, MK Dons and eventually Notts County. He took charge of the latter on a caretaker basis in 2017 in what was a brief foray into management. As of 2020, Smith was coaching youngsters in Florida. | Getty Images

11. Mark Viduka
Viduka's first season with the Whites was a strong one, it's fair to say. He bagged 22 goals in total, including four in the club's Champions League campaign. Viduka hit the back of the net on 72 occasions during his 166 outings for Leeds before joining Middlesbrough in 2004. He finished his career in 2009 after two years at Newcastle and he now lives in Croatia where he owns a coffee shop. | Getty Images
