The 25-year-old helped the Whites claim a 0-0 draw with arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon in Premier League action.

Phillips put in a strong showing at Elland Road as he was pitted against Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes in Marcelo Bielsa's man-to-man marking system.

The Portuguese playmaker has 16 goals and 11 assists this season in the league alone for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's outfit.

Leeds kept his influence on the match to a minimum largely in West Yorkshire largely in part thanks to Phillips during a competitive fixture which ebbed and flowed before resulting in a share of the spoils.

England boss Gareth Southgate was in attendance to keep a watchful eye over his Three Lions contingent for the meeting of two old foes.

He wasn't the only one left impressed, though, with the Yorkshire Pirlo winning the club's man of the match award on the Whites social media channels afterwards.

UK rapper AJ Tracey hailed Phillips as a "baller" in response to the club's official account for his assured showing.

The NME award winner - who hails from London originally - is a Tottenham Hotspur supporter but clearly has a soft spot for the Thorp Arch academy product.

Phillips said post-match of the performance: "I enjoyed the game having a battle in midfield. We man mark every game. I tried to keep Bruno [Fernandes] quiet.

"Thankfully he didn’t pop up with a goal so my job is done. This is what we are about - Leeds as a club and a team, making it hard for teams to come here.
