Leeds had been hoping to sign Red Bull Salzburg's US international midfielder Brenden Aaronson but bids of £15m and £20m were not accepted by the Austrian side.
Heading into the final day of the window, it meant that aside from the arrival of Joseph, the only other transfer business had involved the loan exits of Cody Drameh to Cardiff City, Josh Galloway to FC United of Manchester United, Bobby Kamwa to Dunfermline Athletic and Ryan Edmondson to Port Vale.
But if that proves to be United's lot, then what issues would still persist following the 11pm deadline? We take a look.

5. Goals
The sooner Patrick Bamford is back from injury the better. Without him, and in addition to other injuries, Leeds have only netted 24 goals in 21 games and Raphinha has put away eight of them followed by Jack Harrison with four. No other player has more than two. Needs more.
6. Injuries
This dovetails into just about every issue as the Whites have been hit by injuries all over the park at some point, apart from in goal. A transfer window can't cure injuries but it can give you other options though stockpiling becomes a problem when players return.
7. Newcastle United
The Magpies were always going to be the big movers in the January window after their Saudi takeover and they certainly didn't disappoint. Eddie Howe's side are still in the drop zone but will fancy their chances of a quick rise given their new additions.
8. The table
Following on from the Newcastle threat, it must be remembered that Leeds are only seven points clear of the drop zone and that three of the five sides below them have at least one game in hand. Watford are likely to improve under wily new boss Roy Hodgson.
