Leeds United still have one more game to play this season with Sunday’s all-important Championship play-off final set to bring the curtain down on their campaign in dramatic fashion. The Whites will hope to be a Premier League club from full-time but irrespective of what happens on Sunday, next week promises to be a busy one at Elland Road as they begin planning for next season.
The club will also release a retained list in the days that follow their Wembley appearance and with a number of entering the final few weeks of their current deals, it promises to intrigue. Some players may be offered the chance to stay on next season, while others will be released.
Those who leave the club will join a raft of free agents looking for new clubs this summer, of which several are familiar to Whites supporters. Here’s a look at those ex-Leeds players who have been released by EFL and Premier League clubs following the end of the regular season.
1. Matt Smith (Salford City)
Smith spent two and a half seasons with Salford, racking up 119 appearances and scoring 44 goals. At 34, he may well be looking to extend his career with another Football League club next season.
2. Lee Peltier (Rotherham United)
The 37-year-old made 28 outings for Rotherham this season but couldn't prevent the club from dropping out of the Championship. It remains to be seen if he plans to continue his career.
3. Paul Huntington (Carlisle United)
The defender, who spent three seasons with the Whites at the beginning of his career, has spent the last two years with hometown club Carlisle. Again, at 36, it remains to be seen if Huntington will continue his playing career.
4. Tom Pearce (Wigan Athletic)
Pearce has been with Wigan since leaving Leeds in 2019 but he'll be looking for a new club this summer.
5. Bobby Kamwa (Burton Albion)
Kamwa joined Burton in 2022 after his release by Leeds and he made 26 appearances for the club this season. However, he couldn't do enough to earn a new deal.
6. Mustapha Carayol (Burton Albion)
Carayol, who had a brief loan spell with Leeds in 2016, has been around in his career and after his release from Burton he will be looking for his 17th club this summer.
