Spurs release update on major injury doubt vs Leeds United as need for complex surgery revealed

Son suffered a head injury during Spurs’ 2-1 Champions League victory over Olympique de Marseille in midweek but now faces a race to be passed fit for the World Cup in a few weeks’ time after it was revealed he ‘will undergo surgery’ after sustaining a fracture to the area surrounding his left eye.

A brief statement from Tottenham read: “We can confirm that Heung-Min Son will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye.

“The South Korea international suffered the injury during the first half of Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League victory at Olympique Marseille.

“Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”

No time-frame has been offered regarding the 30-year-old’s return to action, however he is expected to miss this weekend’s fixture with Liverpool and potentially Spurs’ next Premier League encounter versus Leeds as well.

South Korea’s national football association released the following, in light of the injury and proximity to this year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar: "We will decide whether he could participate the World Cup or not after the outcome of his surgery. We are keep cooperating with Tottenham medical team on Son's injury."

Spurs are currently without Dejan Kulusevski or Richarlison in attack, while England’s Harry Kane is also one booking away from accruing a one-match suspension, should he pick up a yellow card during Spurs’ encounter with Liverpool, or in their midweek League Cup Third Round tie with Nottingham Forest before facing Leeds next weekend.
