Hide AdSwitzerland opened the scoring in the second half after a drab opening 45 minutes between the two countries.
Xherdan Shaqiri swung in a 49th-minute corner and Breel Embolo held off the challenge of Connor Roberts to send his header past a despairing Danny Ward.
Wales, though, levelled after 74 minutes from a short corner routine to haul themselves back into the encounter.
The ball was worked to Joe Morrell and his cross was superbly met by Kieffer Moore, who headed home his sixth goal in 18 international appearances.
