ITV Sport summariser and former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has dubbed Leeds United defender Max Wober's own goal for Austria at Euro 2024 as 'really poor defending'.

The ex-Republic of Ireland man is a pundit for ITV at this summer's European Championships and has a reputation for being somewhat outspoken on footballing matters.

Keane, along with host Laura Woods, former Old Trafford teammate and England international Gary Neville, as well as ex-Arsenal Ian Wright, assessed Wober's pivotal contribution during the first half of Austria's tournament opener against France.

The 26-year-old headed Kylian Mbappe's cross into his own net beyond goalkeeper Patrick Pentz to give Les Bleus the lead in Dusseldorf, a moment which was criticised heavily by the ITV panel at the break.

"He just needs to slow down a little bit," Keane began. "Obviously it's a decent ball into the box but I think that's really poor defending. Everyone will say it's a bit unlucky with the pace of the ball, but you've just got to get your body position right. When you head it at that angle, there's a good chance of it going into your own net. Really, really poor defending."

"The defender's not looking at the ball. If the ball's coming across, you've got to look at it," Wright added.

"When a ball is being driven across, you have to set yourself. If you're on the move, you end up doing all these things," Neville said, drawing on his experience as a former international and Premier League defender.

ITV host Woods suggested the Leeds man was caught in two minds and panicked at the speed of the ball being played into a dangerous area inside Austria's penalty, to which Keane responded in the affirmative.

"That's exactly what he did, he did panic," the Irishman said.

Wober was subsequently brought off by head coach Ralf Rangnick on 59 minutes having already picked up a booking during the first half whilst also colliding with Antoine Griezmann, which drew the attention of the officials, shortly after the restart.

The Austrian remains contracted at Elland Road and will return for pre-season following Austria's Euro 2024 elimination, unless a resolution can be found that sees him spend a second consecutive season away from LS11.
